Lightly modified 84 SE
« le: Octobre 04, 2006, 09:28:12 am »

Summary: 1984 SE with 1986 drivetrain, 141,000km, 5-speed, tilt, delay wipers, power windows, sunroof.  Great restoration or swap potential.

It started as an 1984 SE with the "sport" 4-speed manual transaxle, complete with all the oddities everyone loves about the Fiero's debut year.  I am happy to say however that at this point the quirks are gone and what's left is a well-behaved little car with potential for either showroom-quality restoration or an engine swap.

While the VIN, production date, and some appearance items say 1984, everything that makes it go says 1986.  The drivetrain was upgraded to the 1986 Duke/Isuzu 5-speed two years ago, and at the same time all electronics from the instrument panel back to the tail lights were replaced with that of the later years.  Click here to read about the upgrade in detail.  Polyurethane cradle bushings were installed at the time of the drivetrain swap.  Decklid torsion springs have been replaced with gas struts.  The battery was replaced in August 2006.

The brakes on all four feet have relatively new pads & rotors.  The rear calipers have been rebuilt, and the parking brake actually works! The steering rack & column have been recently rebuilt, leaving the front end rattle-free.  The rear tires have less than one season on them, and have a tread depth of approximately 7mm; the front tires have approximately 4mm of tread remaining.  Rear wheels are OEM 14" "turbofan" alloys; front wheels are the same style but have an offset which is about 1cm greater, probably from a Sunbird.

The interior has a Koss AM/FM/MP3/CD sound system, including new 4" Apline speakers in the dash, and a 5" subwoofer in the "performance sound" enclosure which is driven by a custom amplifier.  The headrest speakers in each seat sound reasonable for their age.  Door striker bolts, hinge pins and bushings are all new.  Sunroof has relatively new hardware and weather stripping, and includes a shade.

Flaws...  the seats and interior panels show the "normal" wear in all the expected places.  Passenger seat skin is intact, but stained.  The outer bolster on the driver's seat is worn through.  The dashboard outer vent pods are cracked, and the radio and shifter surrounds have the usual curled vinyl at their edges.  There are small tears in the carpet at the base of each wheel well hump.

Both sail panel frames, the driver's side in particular, are heat-warped and in need of replacement.  The right-front corner of the hood needs a small amount of body work as does the front fascia just to the right of the radiator opening.  Overall the paint is 20 years old, and shows signs of once having aftermarket pinstriping/decals stuck to it.  While the photos show the car with a gold front fascia, please note that it will be sold with a white front fascia installed.

Located just outside of Carleton Place, Ontario.  Asking $2,500 as is, negotiable within reason to members of the GTA, Ottawa, and Montreal clubs.  If she's still in our driveway in April 2007, she goes in the Auto Trader at whatever the going rate is at that time.
